5 Travel Mistakes

Here's what NOT to do in València

Hi viatgers,

Nobody wants to be that guy when they’re on vacation.

So let’s talk about travel mistakes I see all the time (and what you should do instead).

Aaaaand if you’re still worried — don’t forget to send me a message āœ‰ļø

5 Travel Mistakes to Avoid

Going to the beach at 2PM

Hey, so I know that people eat lunch at 12PM in a lot of countries. So right after lunch sounds like a great time to just relax and enjoy.

But this is the WORST time of the day to be under the sun.

The UV factor is highest at this time and you WILL spend the rest of your vacation with a sunburn.

So instead, try staying inside during the hottest part of the day.

Staying at an Airbnb

Remember last year when there were a bunch of news articles about Catalans attacking tourists with water guns?

That was part of an anti-Airbnb protest.

Valencia is also currently undergoing a housing crisis — and Airbnb continues to make it worse.

So please — stay at a hotel. I promise you, you’ll find lovely accommodations to match your budget without upsetting the locals.

Eating paella for dinner

Paella is exclusively a lunch-time food.

(i.e. around 2—3PM)

Of course, this isn’t the end of the world if you eat it for dinner. But chances are — the only people that serve paella for dinner are going to be tourist-trap restaurants.

Soooo not exactly something I’d recommend.

Not learning any Valencian

I’m not saying you need to become fluent — but learning a few travel phrases will go a long way towards being a more respectful tourist.

And yes — I do say to learn Valencian, not just Spanish.

Believe me when I say that Valencians will really appreciate this gesture.

So don’t just be another guiri (foreigner). Be a traveler that respects the local culture.

Wearing flip-flops in the city center

… just, don’t.

It’s really not socially acceptable to wear flip-flops in the city.

At the beach — of course.

But don’t expect to be allowed to walk into the cathedral in flip flops.

So make sure to pack some more city-appropriate shoes!

Hope that helps, friends!

Because my philosophy is that — it’s okay for people to be able to tell you’re a tourist. You are a tourist, after all.

But you don’t want to be that tourist.

Bon viatge,
Kevin
