It's not what you think it is

Hi viatgers,

If you’re coming to Valencia this week, you might be HORRIFIED by what you’re about to see.

Especially if you’re American.

And especially if you’re unfamiliar with how some traditions get taken/adopted throughout history.

I’m talking about the La Cucurulla (or Capirote in Spanish).

šŸ‘‡ Trigger Alert:

During Easter, you’ll see MANY parades with people dressed in an …eye-catching outfit.

But here’s the thing:

It’s not what you think it is.

The Cucurulla is a traditional dress that penitents wear during The Holy Week to symbolize repentance before Easter.

Aaaaand an infamous group from the US adopted this outfit during the 20th century for a very different reason.

So while it’s completely normal to be caught off guard seeing hundreds of people dressed like this, running through the coastal streets of Valencia.

But this tradition is at least 600 years old — and has absolutely nothing to do with the modern ā€œadaptationā€.

So don’t panic — everything will be okay šŸ˜…
